며칠 전, 지역 뉴스에서 봉화 은어축제 소식을 들었다. 축하행사로 윤도현 콘서트가 열린다고 했다. 비도 그렇고 농사도 그렇고, YB 콘서트를 보러 가기로 했다. 다시는 볼 일이 없을 것 같아 제대로 보기로 했다. 시작이 8시라는데 다섯 시에 도착해서 어두워질 때까지 책을 읽었다. 날랜 남편 덕분에 맨 앞줄에서 보게 되었다. 손뼉치고 소리 지르고 해드 뱅잉도 했다.
엄마와, 일흔이 넘으셨었다, 젊은 가수들이 나오는 텔레비전 프로그램을 함께 본 적이 있었다. 시끄럽고 어지럽다고 다른 것 보자고 하지 않으시고 열심히 보셨다. 프로가 끝나자 엄마는 다음에 태어나면 가수가 되고 싶다고 하셨다. 뜻밖의 말씀에 내가 이유를 묻자 엄마는 그러셨다. "나도 좋고, 보는 사람들도 좋고."
콘서트 끝나고 돌아오는 길, 가랑비가 내렸다. 잭슨 브라운의 노래가 생각났다. 가수는 본질적으로 유랑인이 아닐까. 윤도현도 나흘째 집에 들어가지 못했다고 했다.

They're the first to come 인부들은 제일 먼저 왔다가 and last to leave 제일 마지막에 떠나는 이들이에요. Working for that minimum wage 쥐꼬리만한 월급 받고 They'll set it up in another town 다음 공연도시에 무대를 설치하겠지요.
Tonight the people were so fine 오늘밤은 청중들이 아주 좋았어요 They waited there in line 조용히 줄을 서서 기다리고 And when they got up on their feet 때론 자리에서 일어나서 and made the show 열광적인 공연이 되었지요.
And that was sweet 기분이 정말 좋았어요. But I can hear the sound 하지만 내가 듣는 of slamming doors and folding chairs 문 닫히는 소리와 의자 접는 소리를 That's sound they'll never know 관객들은 절대 모를 거에요.
Now roll them cases out 이제 상자를 꺼내고 and lift them amps 앰프를 들어올리고 haul them trusses down 무대장치도 내리고 and get'em up them ramps 계단도 치우겠지요.
When it comes to moving me 내가 무대를 떠나면 You know you guys are the champs 당신들이 주인공이 되지요. But when the last guitar's 그렇지만 마지막 기타가 been packed away 꾸려질 때면 You know that I still want to play 내가 계속 피아노를 치고 싶어 한다는 걸 알 거에요. So just make sure you got it all set to go 그러니까 다른 짐부터 챙겨주세요. Before you come for my piano 그리고 마지막으로 내 피아노로 오세요.
But the bands on the bus 밴드는 어느새 버스에 올라 and they're waiting to go 버스가 떠나기를 기다리고 있어요. We've got to drive all night 밤새도록 버스를 달려 And do the show in Chicago 시카고에서 공연을 할 거에요. or Detroit, I don't know 아니, 디트로이트인지도 모르겠네요. We do so many shows in a row 날마다 공연을 하다 보니 and these town all look the same 모든 도시가 똑같아 보이거든요.
We just pass the time in the hotel rooms 우린 호텔 방에서 시간을 보내다가 and wader round backstage 무대 뒷쪽에서 서성거리지요. Till those lights come up 불이 켜지고 and we hear that crowd 관객들 소리가 들리면 and we remember why we came 우리가 여기에 온 이유를 기억해 낸답니다.
Now we got country 버스에는 컨츄리 웨스턴, and western on the bus R&B R&B가 울려퍼지고 We got disco in eight tracks 8트렉 디스코에 and cassettes in stereo 스테레오 카세트도 있어요.
We've got rural scenes & magazines 시골 경치도 좋고 잡지도 있네요. We've got truckers on the CB 무전기로는 트럭 기사의 목소리가 들려오고 We've got Richard Pryor on the video 비디오에는 리차드 프라이어가 나오네요.
We got the time to think of the one we love 사랑하는 이들을 생각할 시간은 충분해요. while the miles roll away 버스로 수 마일을 가야 하니까요. But the only time that seems too short 그렇지만 공연하는 시간은 is the time that we get to play 왜 그리 짧게 느껴질까요.
People you've got the power 그대들은 힘이 있어요. over what we do 그대들에 따라 우리 연주가 결정되지요. You can sit there and wait 조용히 앉아서 기다릴 수도 있고 or you can pull us through 우릴 끌어내릴 수도 있으니까요.
Come along, sing the song 다 함께 노래를 불러요. You know you can't go wrong 잘못 될 것이 없잖아요. Now the promoter don't mind 공연 기획자도 신경 안 쓰고 and the union don't mind 노조도 괜찮아요. If you take a little time 조금 더 시간을 내서 And we leave it all behind 모든 것 재쳐놓고 and sing one more song 한 곡 더 부르고 싶어요.
